About the Lab
The Gutekunst Lab is interested in pushing the limits of complexity in macromolecular systems using innovative concepts from synthetic organic chemistry. Specific projects in the lab will explore the design of novel monomers for the construction of functional polyamides, the development of small molecule reagents for the dynamic modulation of branched polymer architectures, and the investigation of new concepts for creating covalent bonds in challenging contexts. Each of these research projects will enable the generation of new functional materials with structures or assemblies that were previously inaccessible for study. Prospective students will obtain extensive training in synthetic organic chemistry, as well as polymer synthesis and characterization.

Alvaro receives the 2024 ACS Leader Scholar award! Congrats!
The ACS Leader Scholars program is special cohort formed by the American Chemical Society for undergraduate and graduate students interested in professional development, leadership training, and networking. Activities will be led by various STEM and social science professionals whose experiences and background includes providing professional development to undergraduates, graduate students, and early career scientists.
Sterling and Xuelin both defended their theses this spring!
Sterling defended his thesis on “Synthesis and Functionalization of Bullvalene-Derived Materials” and Xuelin defended his thesis on “DEVELOPMENT OF FUNCTIONAL ENYNE MOLECULES TO CONTROL DEGRADABILITY AND ARCHITECTURE IN METATHESIS POLYMERS”. We’ll miss their expertise in the lab, but wish them the best with their careers after Tech! Congrats Dr. Sweningson and Dr. Sui!!!
